The One with the Wikis...

In order to catch up the weeks I have decided to post twice today, this post is related to Wiki's and collaborative writing.

Week 3 lecture started off with a brief update on what is expected of our blogs, this I found useful, It gave us a clearer explanation of the expectations of our blogs and they type of content required. We then moved onto the lecture which was looking at this weeks topic, wiki's. We looked at what wiki's are and what they are used for, although I did feel that it would have been useful if an academic definition of a wiki was included in the lecture. With the lecture sparking my interest in wiki's I have a look online and found this very simple video which explains what wiki's are in a very simple way. Have a look.

Basically as you can see from the video a wiki is a tool which groups can use to help them work together or even create something together. We know from last week that a blog is regarded as one to many in that one person writes the blog and many people read the blog. Wiki's are regarded as many to many, many people work together and write the wiki and many people read the wiki.

In the lab we looked at popular wiki's the most famous being Wikipedia which is basically an online encyclopaedia which is written by the users. The fact that it is written by the users means it has a vast amount of information which is constantly updated, however it also means that the content is not always correct.

I learned that wiki's can be very useful to businesses, from my own experience I know that The RBS Group use wiki's to update and maintain their internal directory. This means that when you change decks or offices it is very simple to update your details on the directory.

In this weeks lab we started the first e-activity, it was unfortunate that we were not able to pick our own groups for this activity as we were told during the lecture that people who know each other tend to work better with wiki's. Regardless we have been assigned the task to set up a wiki to describe what a wiki is, their features and the advantages and disadvantages of collaborative writing. This week we are basically doing the background research into wiki's. As a group we decided it would be important to constantly update the wiki with any information we find, this will prevent two people doing the same research twice.

That's it for this week folks, if there are any interesting wiki sites you know of please leave them in the comments section.

Next week on "Web Innovation Today" we will be looking at Media Sharing and Social Bookmarking, there will also be an update on the e-activity so don't forget to click in!

  1. Well done, this is an excellent start to your blog where you have covered the remit and included some reflection on the module contents and learning. I also like the links and video you have added. Sorry to read your disappointment in the allocation of groups. Since students in your lab group are from different programmes, the allocation was to avoid some students being left out. However, research has found that the best groupwork can come from students who do not previously know each other so hopefully that will be the case here.....
I look forward to reading your future posts.
